Reducing Waste

Reducing waste

When it comes to thinking about how to engage in a meaningful way with my environment through beekeeping, I spend a lot of time thinking about the waste I produce and whether or not it's ethical to proceed with such waste. One way that I have found to reduce waste is by re-using clean cardboard boxes given to me by a local market. I line the cardboard with unbleached and/or biodegradable parchment paper, and if there is no lid, I make one from a used but clean paper bag, as seen here. It is sturdy, reusable, clean, and has already traveled to my town, thereby reducing my carbon footprint as well. Finding differently sized boxes locally is advantageous to filling different quantities of honeycomb orders, and means I don't have piles of different sized boxes waiting around collecting dust. The local market appreciates me taking them away, and I appreciate the relationship I have with that market. It is all-around win-win-win. Plus, it's as plastic-free as I can get if I don't use any plastic tape!
